A free after-school program for Oceanside teens ages 13–17. Tutoring, environmental literacy, career exploration, and surfing — three days a week, all year round.

Free. Year-round. For Oceanside teens.
For many Oceanside teens, the after-school hours are the hardest. The Ocean Stewards program fills that time with something real — academic support, environmental education, and a direct connection to the ocean that most of these youth have never had.
We use surfing because it works.
Getting a teenager on a wave builds confidence in a way that's hard to replicate in a classroom. But surfing is the entry point, not the endpoint. By the end of the program, youth are water quality monitors, environmental advocates, and ocean stewards — not just surfers.
Homework help and academic support, followed by hands-on environmental education — water quality testing, marine debris identification, and watershed mapping.
Guest speakers from marine science, environmental policy, surf industry, and community organizing. Resume writing, public speaking, and professional skills.
In the water with certified instructors, wetsuits, and boards — all provided. Beach cleanups, marine life observation, and water quality monitoring in action.

Ocean confidence and surf skills from beginner to independent paddler
Environmental literacy: water quality, watersheds, marine ecosystems
Academic support and improved school performance
Career awareness in marine science, environmental policy, and ocean industries
Community belonging and BIPOC representation in coastal spaces
Leadership pathways through junior instructor and mentorship roles
