Solana Beach's Fletcher Cove is one of North County's safest lifeguarded swim-and-surf beaches, making it ideal for our One Ocean Scholarship cohorts. We partner with Solana Beach School District and the San Dieguito Union High School District for youth recruitment, with a focus on inland neighborhoods east of I-5 where coastal access is geographically close but economically out of reach.
Representation in the lineup changes outcomes. When Solana Beach kids see coaches who share their language and background, retention rises — they're not guests in someone else's surf culture.
BIPOC surf lessons in Solana Beach address a real access gap: 24% of local residents are BIPOC, yet lineups and surf marketing still center a narrow demographic. Our coaching staff and alumni reflect the communities we serve — that visibility changes whether a child believes they belong.
Parents in Solana Beach often ask how a nonprofit can offer everything free. Answer: San Diego Foundation grants, community donors, and partners who believe Solana Beach youth belong in the lineup — same as any other kid in San Diego.
With 13,296 residents, Solana Beach is one of the communities where a single free surf cohort can change dozens of lives per season. Our shuttles and school partnerships make distance (on the coast) a logistics problem we solve, not a barrier families carry alone.

Fletcher Cove was opened in 1946 after dynamite was used to blast through the sandstone bluffs — creating the only public beach access in Solana Beach.

Un Mar de Colores offers free surf lessons year-round for youth ages 6–17 across Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Cardiff, Del Mar, La Jolla, Pacific Beach, and partner cities. Our coaches are certified by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Division and many are graduates of our own Surf Athletic Scholarship program. Lessons prioritize water-safety fundamentals first: students start in chest-deep whitewater under direct instructor supervision and progress to unbroken waves only after demonstrating paddle control and ocean awareness. Every session is fully equipped — wetsuit, board, rashguard — and transportation is provided from our partner Title I schools across San Diego County.
We do not charge families. Ever. That policy is structural — grants, donors, and shop revenue fund access so Solana Beach youth are never waitlisted for inability to pay.

Un Mar de Colores surf lessons in Solana Beach are 100% free — including wetsuits, soft-top boards, rashguards, transportation from partner schools, and certified bilingual instruction. Commercial programs in San Diego County typically charge $50–$150 per session. We fund access through grants and donors so Solana Beach families never pay.
Coaches hold CPR and First Aid credentials and train with San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Division protocols. Many are alumni of our Surf Athletic Scholarship program. Safety documentation is available to Solana Beach parents on request.
We serve youth ages 6–17 with age-appropriate cohorts. One Ocean programming focuses on 6–12, while teens may connect to Ocean Stewards or scholarship pathways. Enrollment runs through Solana Beach School District partners and community referrals in Solana Beach.
