Pacific Beach sits between Mission Bay and the open Pacific, producing the mellowest learner waves in the city. Tourmaline Surfing Park — designated a surf-only beach in 1981 — is the safest and most instructor-friendly break in San Diego. Over 55% of students at Mission Beach Elementary, Pacific Beach Middle, and Mission Bay High qualify for free or reduced meals, making this one of our highest-impact urban partnerships.
Gear quality matters for cold Pacific water: ill-fitting rental wetsuits end sessions early. We size youth properly and maintain equipment for weekly use, not tourist weekend turnover.
Latino and Indigenous youth in Pacific Beach inherit coastal histories commercial surf culture erases. Our lessons integrate Kumeyaay stewardship narratives and environmental justice framing — surf as connection to place, not extraction from it.
Whether Pacific Beach is on the coast or on the coast inland, we treat transportation as part of the program — not an extra parents must figure out. That's how you build real access, not marketing copy.
Pacific Beach's Spanish-speaking households (28%) get parent communications in both languages, every time. Coastal access fails when language is treated as an afterthought.

Un Mar de Colores offers free surf lessons year-round for youth ages 6–17 across Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Cardiff, Del Mar, La Jolla, Pacific Beach, and partner cities. Our coaches are certified by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Division and many are graduates of our own Surf Athletic Scholarship program. Lessons prioritize water-safety fundamentals first: students start in chest-deep whitewater under direct instructor supervision and progress to unbroken waves only after demonstrating paddle control and ocean awareness. Every session is fully equipped — wetsuit, board, rashguard — and transportation is provided from our partner Title I schools across San Diego County.
We do not charge families. Ever. That policy is structural — grants, donors, and shop revenue fund access so Pacific Beach youth are never waitlisted for inability to pay.

Coaches hold CPR and First Aid credentials and train with San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Division protocols. Many are alumni of our Surf Athletic Scholarship program. Safety documentation is available to Pacific Beach parents on request.
Yes — all programming is bilingual. In Pacific Beach, where 28% of households are Spanish-speaking, we pair bilingual coaches to every session and send parent communications in both English and Spanish.
No swimming test is required. We begin in chest-deep whitewater under direct coach supervision and build water comfort progressively. Many Pacific Beach beginners start with limited pool experience and gain confidence within the first few weeks through structured safety drills.
Sí. Todos los programas de Un Mar de Colores en Pacific Beach son 100% gratuitos. Proporcionamos trajes de neopreno 3/2mm, tablas de surf, transporte desde escuelas asociadas como Pacific Beach Middle, Mission Bay High, Mission Beach Elementary, e instrucción bilingüe certificada.
