Pacific Beach sits between Mission Bay and the open Pacific, producing the mellowest learner waves in the city. Tourmaline Surfing Park — designated a surf-only beach in 1981 — is the safest and most instructor-friendly break in San Diego. Over 55% of students at Mission Beach Elementary, Pacific Beach Middle, and Mission Bay High qualify for free or reduced meals, making this one of our highest-impact urban partnerships.
With 28% Spanish-speaking households in Pacific Beach, bilingual parent communications during contest season keep families informed — registration deadlines, travel logistics, and scholarship coverage explained in English and Spanish.

When we say free for Pacific Beach youth, we mean wetsuits, soft-tops, rashguards, sunscreen, transportation, and instruction — the full stack commercial programs charge $50–$150 per session for.

Tourmaline was designated surf-only by San Diego City in 1981, making it the first formally protected teaching beach in Southern California.

The Surf Athletic Scholarship program supports BIPOC youth and teens pursuing competitive surfing at the scholarship or professional level. The program provides high-performance wetsuits and boards, pays all competition entry fees, covers contest travel costs across the California circuit, and provides one-on-one coaching from certified trainers. Scholarship recipients are mentored by alumni and partner professional BIPOC surfers, and the program specifically addresses the financial barriers that have historically excluded Latino, Indigenous, and Black youth from the competitive surf pipeline.
Un Mar de Colores is recognized by partners including the San Diego Foundation, Surfrider San Diego, WILDCOAST, and school districts across San Diego — not a pop-up program, a sustained movement.

Scholarship covers competition entry fees, California contest circuit travel (transport, lodging, meals), high-performance wetsuits and boards, one-on-one coaching, physical therapy and injury prevention, mental performance training, nutrition and conditioning modules, and mentorship from professional BIPOC surfers. Pacific Beach families pay nothing.
Latino, Indigenous, and Black youth have been historically excluded from competitive surf pipelines by cost and culture. With 44% of Pacific Beach residents BIPOC, scholarship rewrites who gets fees, travel, and mentorship — access as corrective justice.
