Vista is the second-largest inland city in North County San Diego with a 44% Hispanic/Latino population. Our Vista cohorts travel by shuttle from Alamosa Park Elementary and Rancho Minerva Middle to The Strand in Oceanside — a 15-minute drive. Vista Unified's Title I schools are one of our largest feeder populations for both the Ocean Stewards After-School Program and our One Ocean summer cohorts.

From Vista's Title I schools to the sand, our pipeline is built on real partnerships — not generic 'serving the area' language. Every cohort names the schools, beaches, and community orgs involved.
With 101,638 residents, Vista is one of the communities where a single free surf cohort can change dozens of lives per season. Our shuttles and school partnerships make distance (7 miles inland) a logistics problem we solve, not a barrier families carry alone.

The Surf Athletic Scholarship program supports BIPOC youth and teens pursuing competitive surfing at the scholarship or professional level. The program provides high-performance wetsuits and boards, pays all competition entry fees, covers contest travel costs across the California circuit, and provides one-on-one coaching from certified trainers. Scholarship recipients are mentored by alumni and partner professional BIPOC surfers, and the program specifically addresses the financial barriers that have historically excluded Latino, Indigenous, and Black youth from the competitive surf pipeline.

Un Mar de Colores is a BIPOC-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in Oceanside, California in 2018. Our instructors are certified by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Division and hold CPR + First Aid credentials.

Private contest coaches in San Diego County often charge $100–$200 per hour. Un Mar scholarship provides one-on-one certified coaching, heat strategy, and mental performance training free for Vista recipients — plus fees, travel, and gear.
Are contest entry fees paid for Vista scholars?+
Yes — NSSA, WSA, and regional qualifier entry fees across the California contest circuit are paid for scholarship athletes. Vista families aren't choosing between groceries and contest registration.
