Vista is the second-largest inland city in North County San Diego with a 44% Hispanic/Latino population. Our Vista cohorts travel by shuttle from Alamosa Park Elementary and Rancho Minerva Middle to The Strand in Oceanside — a 15-minute drive. Vista Unified's Title I schools are one of our largest feeder populations for both the Ocean Stewards After-School Program and our One Ocean summer cohorts.

Surf Lessons en Vista — Lo que debes saber
Volunteer-trained vs certified-coach surf lessons make a safety difference. Un Mar requires CPR, First Aid, and lifeguard division coordination — non-negotiable for youth programming in open ocean.
Gear quality matters for cold Pacific water: ill-fitting rental wetsuits end sessions early. We size youth properly and maintain equipment for weekly use, not tourist weekend turnover.

Safe, lifeguard-coordinated instruction is non-negotiable for Vista youth. Every water session runs inside flagged zones with certified coaches — parents shouldn't have to choose between access and safety.
When we say free for Vista youth, we mean wetsuits, soft-tops, rashguards, sunscreen, transportation, and instruction — the full stack commercial programs charge $50–$150 per session for.

Currículo del programa
Un Mar de Colores offers free surf lessons year-round for youth ages 6–17 across Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Cardiff, Del Mar, La Jolla, Pacific Beach, and partner cities. Our coaches are certified by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Division and many are graduates of our own Surf Athletic Scholarship program. Lessons prioritize water-safety fundamentals first: students start in chest-deep whitewater under direct instructor supervision and progress to unbroken waves only after demonstrating paddle control and ocean awareness. Every session is fully equipped — wetsuit, board, rashguard — and transportation is provided from our partner Title I schools across San Diego County.

What should my child bring to their first surf lesson?+
We provide wetsuits, boards, rashguards, and sunscreen. Your child should bring a towel, water, and swim-appropriate clothing. We handle transportation from partner schools when applicable — check with us for your Vista cohort schedule.
Is transportation provided from Vista?+
If Vista is inland, we provide shuttle transportation from partner Title I schools to our nearest teaching beaches — distance is on us, not your family. Coastal Vista cohorts meet directly at local breaks. Confirm your cohort pickup location when you enroll.
Do you need to know how to swim for surf lessons?+
No swimming test is required. We begin in chest-deep whitewater under direct coach supervision and build water comfort progressively. Many Vista beginners start with limited pool experience and gain confidence within the first few weeks through structured safety drills.
