Vista is the second-largest inland city in North County San Diego with a 44% Hispanic/Latino population. Our Vista cohorts travel by shuttle from Alamosa Park Elementary and Rancho Minerva Middle to The Strand in Oceanside — a 15-minute drive. Vista Unified's Title I schools are one of our largest feeder populations for both the Ocean Stewards After-School Program and our One Ocean summer cohorts.

Free surf camp for Vista youth is part of a broader Cali-Baja movement — ocean access, watershed health, and cultural arts — documented across our partner network in San Diego County.
Free youth surf camps in North County are rare because equipment, insurance, and food costs are real. Un Mar combines San Diego Foundation grants, community donors, and disciplined safety protocols — operating since 2018 without charging families.

Cross-border watershed work matters to Vista because Tijuana River pollution and coastal health don't stop at a border fence. Our education modules name that reality honestly.

Currículo del programa
Our summer surf camps run Monday through Friday across North County and San Diego, serving BIPOC youth ages 6–17. Each one-week cohort combines four mornings of in-water surf instruction with afternoon programming in marine ecology, Kumeyaay coastal history, and cultural arts. Camps are capped at 18 students per cohort to maintain a 4:1 student-to-instructor ratio, and every camp ends with a Friday family showcase on the beach. Camps are entirely free — wetsuits, boards, transportation, daily lunch, and all materials included.

What gear does my child need for surf camp?+
We provide wetsuits, soft-top surfboards, rashguards, and sunscreen for the full week. Your child should bring a towel, water bottle, and swim-appropriate clothing. No personal board or wetsuit required.
How is Un Mar surf camp different from commercial camps near Oceanside Pier (7 miles) and Carlsbad Tamarack (8 miles)?+
Commercial camps optimize for paying tourists and locals with gear. Un Mar is a BIPOC-led nonprofit: free instruction, Title I partnerships, marine ecology and Kumeyaay history curriculum, and coaches who reflect Vista's communities. We're building access, not selling camp weeks.
Is transportation provided from Vista to surf camp?+
Round-trip shuttle transportation runs from partner Title I schools. If Vista is inland (7 miles inland from the coast), we solve the daily commute — not your family. Coastal cohorts meet directly at local teaching beaches near Oceanside Pier (7 miles) and Carlsbad Tamarack (8 miles).
