Un Mar de Colores ofrece surf lessons gratuitas para jóvenes de Del Mar de 6–17 años, directamente en la costa de Del Mar. Del Mar's 2.5-mile coastline produces some of the cleanest water and most consistent small waves in the region, protected by the San Dieguito River mouth eddies. Our 15th Street Beach lessons sit in front of Powerhouse Park, which doubles as our outdoor classroom. We partner with Del Mar Union's Del Mar Heights and Ashley Falls Elementary — serving primarily inland Del Mar Mesa and Carmel Valley neighborhoods.
Volunteer-trained vs certified-coach surf lessons make a safety difference. Un Mar requires CPR, First Aid, and lifeguard division coordination — non-negotiable for youth programming in open ocean.
BIPOC surf lessons in Del Mar address a real access gap: 20% of local residents are BIPOC, yet lineups and surf marketing still center a narrow demographic. Our coaching staff and alumni reflect the communities we serve — that visibility changes whether a child believes they belong.
With 4,161 residents, Del Mar is one of the communities where a single free surf cohort can change dozens of lives per season. Our shuttles and school partnerships make distance (on the coast) a logistics problem we solve, not a barrier families carry alone.
Safe, lifeguard-coordinated instruction is non-negotiable for Del Mar youth. Every water session runs inside flagged zones with certified coaches — parents shouldn't have to choose between access and safety.

15th Street sits in the heart of Del Mar Village, adjacent to Powerhouse Park, the historic 1928 beach concession building that gives the park its name.

Un Mar de Colores offers free surf lessons year-round for youth ages 6–17 across Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Cardiff, Del Mar, La Jolla, Pacific Beach, and partner cities. Our coaches are certified by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Division and many are graduates of our own Surf Athletic Scholarship program. Lessons prioritize water-safety fundamentals first: students start in chest-deep whitewater under direct instructor supervision and progress to unbroken waves only after demonstrating paddle control and ocean awareness. Every session is fully equipped — wetsuit, board, rashguard — and transportation is provided from our partner Title I schools across San Diego County.
Our coaches include graduates of the Surf Athletic Scholarship program and bilingual educators who reflect the BIPOC communities we serve. We partner with 15+ Title I schools across North County and San Diego.

Coaches hold CPR and First Aid credentials and train with San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Division protocols. Many are alumni of our Surf Athletic Scholarship program. Safety documentation is available to Del Mar parents on request.
Yes — all programming is bilingual. In Del Mar, where 8% of households are Spanish-speaking, we pair bilingual coaches to every session and send parent communications in both English and Spanish.
If Del Mar is inland, we provide shuttle transportation from partner Title I schools to our nearest teaching beaches — distance is on us, not your family. Coastal Del Mar cohorts meet directly at local breaks. Confirm your cohort pickup location when you enroll.
Sí. Todos los programas de Un Mar de Colores en Del Mar son 100% gratuitos.
