Oceanside is Un Mar de Colores's home city — where free surf lessons, summer surf camp, and Ocean Stewards after-school were built for BIPOC youth, not as a commercial surf school. With 3.5 miles of coastline, the 1,942-foot Oceanside Pier, and 53,000+ students in Oceanside Unified, it is the epicenter of our work. The Strand, Wisconsin Street, and South Oceanside Beach host nearly all of our year-round programming, and most of our staff and youth come from the MLK Community Center and Boys & Girls Club of Oceanside.

Surf Lessons en Oceanside — Lo que debes saber

Oceanside’s population is nearly half Latino, yet far fewer regular surfers at local breaks reflect that diversity. Despite living blocks from the pier, many youth in neighborhoods like Libby Lake, Fire Mountain, and the MLK corridor have never accessed the ocean. We remove every barrier we can control: transportation from inland neighborhoods, partnerships with Oceanside Unified’s schools, and equipment ready for the water.

Surf is the entry point, not the endpoint. Youth move through the same pathways on our Youth Programs page — One Ocean (ages 6–12), Ocean Stewards after-school (teens), Surf Athletic Scholarship, and summer intensives — so a first paddle can become belonging, stewardship, and leadership over time.

Beginner surf instruction in Oceanside should start in chest-deep whitewater with lifeguard-trained coaches — not thrown into overhead surf because a school needs content for Instagram. Our progression model is safety-first, documented with San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Division coordination.

South of Oceanside Pier, The Strand has been a teaching beach for San Diego County surf programs for decades. The Oceanside Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Division covers this stretch year-round. Summer swells here are often knee-to-waist high — ideal for first paddles without resorting to steeper North County point breaks.

Wisconsin Street Beach

Secondary Oceanside teaching beach between the pier and harbor jetty — used for Wednesday cohorts and intermediate progression after youth build confidence at The Strand.

Wisconsin Street sits between Oceanside Pier and the harbor breakwater. Slightly more exposed than The Strand, it is still a sand-bottom city beach with lifeguard coverage — our step-up spot before youth see heavier North County water.

Un Mar de Colores offers free surf lessons year-round for youth ages 6–17 across Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Cardiff, Del Mar, La Jolla, Pacific Beach, and partner cities. Our coaches are certified by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Division and many are graduates of our own Surf Athletic Scholarship program. Lessons prioritize water-safety fundamentals first: students start in chest-deep whitewater under direct instructor supervision and progress to unbroken waves only after demonstrating paddle control and ocean awareness. Every session is fully equipped — wetsuit, board, rashguard — and transportation is provided from our partner Title I schools across San Diego County.
