Cardiff Reef is one of California's most beginner-friendly longboard breaks — cobblestone-to-sand bottom with gentle reform. Our Cardiff cohorts draw primarily from Cardiff School District's Ada Harris and Cardiff Elementary, plus Encinitas Union partner schools. The San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve anchors our Cardiff marine biology curriculum, connecting surf to watershed in a way unique to this corner of North County.
Quarterly ocean stewardship workshops in San Diego deepen advocacy and organizing skills for Cardiff by the Sea participants ready to move beyond monthly cleanups.
Free ocean stewardship for Cardiff by the Sea communities is part of Un Mar's BIPOC-led Cali-Baja movement — coastal access as stewardship right, not eco-tourism product.
From Cardiff by the Sea's Title I schools to the sand, our pipeline is built on real partnerships — not generic 'serving the area' language. Every cohort names the schools, beaches, and community orgs involved.
Cardiff by the Sea's Spanish-speaking households (10%) get parent communications in both languages, every time. Coastal access fails when language is treated as an afterthought.

Ocean Stewardship at Un Mar de Colores connects coastal cleanup action with deeper environmental justice education. Monthly cleanups run across Oceanside, Imperial Beach, Cardiff, and partner sites, with each event combining hands-on debris removal with short teaching moments about the watershed-to-ocean pipeline, the plastic pollution crisis, and California coastal policy. Our Ocean Stewardship program is free and family-friendly, and we specifically prioritize recruitment from BIPOC communities whose relationships with the coast have historically been gated by cost or culture. Every participant contributes to our citizen science database tracking pollution patterns across San Diego County.
We do not charge families. Ever. That policy is structural — grants, donors, and shop revenue fund access so Cardiff by the Sea youth are never waitlisted for inability to pay.

We connect cleanup action to who bears pollution burden — especially cross-border Tijuana River watershed impacts that close beaches near Cardiff by the Sea. Stewardship isn't just litter; it's justice framing for BIPOC communities gated from coastal spaces.
Corporate events are often one-day photo ops without data, policy education, or BIPOC recruitment priority. Un Mar offers monthly continuity, citizen science, environmental justice curriculum, and BIPOC-led stewardship for Cardiff by the Sea communities.
Post-cleanup debrief and reflection sessions turn action into learning — plastic pollution science, watershed connections, and advocacy skills. Cardiff by the Sea participants leave as informed stewards, not just tired volunteers.
