Vista is the second-largest inland city in North County San Diego with a 44% Hispanic/Latino population. Our Vista cohorts travel by shuttle from Alamosa Park Elementary and Rancho Minerva Middle to The Strand in Oceanside — a 15-minute drive. Vista Unified's Title I schools are one of our largest feeder populations for both the Ocean Stewards After-School Program and our One Ocean summer cohorts.

From Vista's Title I schools to the sand, our pipeline is built on real partnerships — not generic 'serving the area' language. Every cohort names the schools, beaches, and community orgs involved.
When we say free for Vista youth, we mean wetsuits, soft-tops, rashguards, sunscreen, transportation, and instruction — the full stack commercial programs charge $50–$150 per session for.

Cultural Arts & Storytelling at Un Mar de Colores is where the surf, the coast, and community narrative meet. Quarterly workshops and summer artist residencies bring together youth, professional artists, and Kumeyaay elders to create work that reflects the living cultural traditions of the California coast. Programs center Indigenous, Latino, and Chicano voices historically marginalized in coastal culture, and every workshop ends with a public exhibition, publication, or film screening that returns the art to the community that made it.

We do not charge families. Ever. That policy is structural — grants, donors, and shop revenue fund access so Vista youth are never waitlisted for inability to pay.

What art forms are included?+
Coastal storytelling and oral tradition, Kumeyaay history and living culture, Latino and Chicano surf culture history, visual arts (painting, mural, photography), poetry and spoken word, and film and documentary-making. Vista cohorts rotate through forms across quarterly workshops.
Do I need to bring art supplies?+
No — we provide paint, canvas, cameras, mural materials, and all workshop supplies. Vista families show up ready to create, not shop for materials.
Is Chicano surf culture taught?+
Yes — Latino and Chicano surf culture history modules center longboard traditions, barrio surf scenes, and coastal narratives excluded from mainstream media and Vista Unified School District curriculum.
