Encinitas holds five distinct breaks — Moonlight Beach, Swami's, Beacon's, D Street, and Stone Steps — across Encinitas Union and San Dieguito Union High School District. Our lessons run at Moonlight Beach (with its sheltered lifeguard cove) and Swami's on calmer mornings, with Park Dale Lane and Capri Elementary as our primary Title I partnerships for inland-neighborhood recruitment.
Surf therapy pathways connect to Ocean Stewards after-school and year-round lessons — Encinitas youth aren't discharged into emptiness after one cohort.
Ocean-based therapy near Moonlight Beach, Swami's for Encinitas youth runs monthly cohorts year-round. Inland families rely on shuttles (on the coast) so distance doesn't become another stressor when a child needs support.
Serving Encinitas means meeting families where they are: San Diego schools, community centers, and partner orgs that already hold trust. We don't wait for families to find the beach — we bring youth to the water.
With 62,007 residents, Encinitas is one of the communities where a single free surf cohort can change dozens of lives per season. Our shuttles and school partnerships make distance (on the coast) a logistics problem we solve, not a barrier families carry alone.

Moonlight Beach is named for its former all-night beach parties in the late 1800s. Today it's Encinitas's primary family beach with a large sand area and protected swim zone.
Used only for intermediate/advanced Surf Athletic Scholarship students. Never a beginner break due to reef bottom.
Swami's is named for the Self-Realization Fellowship gardens on the cliff above. One of the most photographed surf spots in California, featured in the Beach Boys' 'Surfin' USA.'

Surf therapy at Un Mar de Colores is more than recreational — it's a structured, trauma-informed mental health program that uses the ocean as a therapeutic setting. Licensed mental health professionals partner with trauma-informed surf coaches to deliver small-group sessions (8 youth maximum) combining ocean-based mindfulness, somatic movement, and culturally grounded healing modules developed with Kumeyaay elders. The program is especially effective for youth navigating anxiety, grief, immigration-related stress, and family instability. All programming is free and open to youth referred through partner schools, mental health agencies, and community organizations.
We do not charge families. Ever. That policy is structural — grants, donors, and shop revenue fund access so Encinitas youth are never waitlisted for inability to pay.

Sessions occur at lifeguard-covered beaches chosen for beginner safety — sandy bottoms and manageable conditions near Moonlight Beach, Swami's. Sites vary by cohort and daily conditions.
Yes — a licensed mental health professional is on-site every session. This isn't a volunteer beach day marketed as therapy. Clinical staff work alongside trauma-informed surf coaches for Encinitas cohorts.
Yes — family and caregiver support sessions are part of the program. Encinitas parents and guardians receive bilingual updates and dedicated sessions — healing isn't isolated to the child on the board.
Sí. Todos los programas de Un Mar de Colores en Encinitas son 100% gratuitos.
