Encinitas holds five distinct breaks — Moonlight Beach, Swami's, Beacon's, D Street, and Stone Steps — across Encinitas Union and San Dieguito Union High School District. Our lessons run at Moonlight Beach (with its sheltered lifeguard cove) and Swami's on calmer mornings, with Park Dale Lane and Capri Elementary as our primary Title I partnerships for inland-neighborhood recruitment.
Ocean-based therapy near Moonlight Beach, Swami's for Encinitas youth runs monthly cohorts year-round. Inland families rely on shuttles (on the coast) so distance doesn't become another stressor when a child needs support.
Free surf therapy in Encinitas for BIPOC youth ages 6–17 combines licensed mental health professionals with trauma-informed surf coaches in cohorts of eight maximum. Un Mar de Colores delivers ocean-based mindfulness, somatic movement, and Kumeyaay-led healing modules at zero cost — funded by grants and donors.
With 62,007 residents, Encinitas is one of the communities where a single free surf cohort can change dozens of lives per season. Our shuttles and school partnerships make distance (on the coast) a logistics problem we solve, not a barrier families carry alone.
Cross-border watershed work matters to Encinitas because Tijuana River pollution and coastal health don't stop at a border fence. Our education modules name that reality honestly.

Moonlight Beach is named for its former all-night beach parties in the late 1800s. Today it's Encinitas's primary family beach with a large sand area and protected swim zone.

Swami's is named for the Self-Realization Fellowship gardens on the cliff above. One of the most photographed surf spots in California, featured in the Beach Boys' 'Surfin' USA.'

Surf therapy at Un Mar de Colores is more than recreational — it's a structured, trauma-informed mental health program that uses the ocean as a therapeutic setting. Licensed mental health professionals partner with trauma-informed surf coaches to deliver small-group sessions (8 youth maximum) combining ocean-based mindfulness, somatic movement, and culturally grounded healing modules developed with Kumeyaay elders. The program is especially effective for youth navigating anxiety, grief, immigration-related stress, and family instability. All programming is free and open to youth referred through partner schools, mental health agencies, and community organizations.
We do not charge families. Ever. That policy is structural — grants, donors, and shop revenue fund access so Encinitas youth are never waitlisted for inability to pay.

Yes — all programming is bilingual. In Encinitas, where 12% of households are Spanish-speaking, bilingual staff lead every session and parent communications arrive in both English and Spanish.
No swimming test is required. We begin in chest-deep whitewater under direct coach and clinical supervision, building water comfort progressively. Many Encinitas participants start with limited pool experience.
Transportation runs from partner schools and referral organizations. If Encinitas is inland (on the coast from the coast), we solve the commute — not your family.
