La Jolla Shores has the gentlest beginner waves in San Diego County — a gradual sandbar bottom, 500 yards of lifeguarded beach, and consistent waist-high surf. Our cohorts come from San Diego Unified's Muirlands Middle, Kate Sessions Elementary, and Mission Bay High, with curriculum support from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Windansea serves only our advanced Surf Athletic Scholarship athletes.
Annual contest gear package for La Jolla scholars ensures no athlete competes on borrowed leftovers while peers have sponsor quivers.
Contest travel costs from La Jolla to California circuit events — NSSA, WSA, regional qualifiers — are covered for scholarship athletes. Families aren't fundraising every weekend (on the coast inland adds transport costs Un Mar absorbs).
La Jolla sits inside San Diego County's coastal equity gap — 35% of residents identify as BIPOC, yet beach access has historically been gated by cost, transportation, and culture. Un Mar de Colores closes that gap with free programming and school-based recruitment.

Windansea is one of California's most historic surf spots, famously chronicled in Tom Wolfe's 'The Pump House Gang.' The iconic palm-frond shack dates to the 1940s.

The Surf Athletic Scholarship program supports BIPOC youth and teens pursuing competitive surfing at the scholarship or professional level. The program provides high-performance wetsuits and boards, pays all competition entry fees, covers contest travel costs across the California circuit, and provides one-on-one coaching from certified trainers. Scholarship recipients are mentored by alumni and partner professional BIPOC surfers, and the program specifically addresses the financial barriers that have historically excluded Latino, Indigenous, and Black youth from the competitive surf pipeline.
We do not charge families. Ever. That policy is structural — grants, donors, and shop revenue fund access so La Jolla youth are never waitlisted for inability to pay.

Scholarship covers competition entry fees, California contest circuit travel (transport, lodging, meals), high-performance wetsuits and boards, one-on-one coaching, physical therapy and injury prevention, mental performance training, nutrition and conditioning modules, and mentorship from professional BIPOC surfers. La Jolla families pay nothing.
Surf lessons serve beginners ages 6–17 with weekly instruction. Scholarship serves contest-ready BIPOC athletes with fees, travel, high-performance gear, and elite coaching. Many La Jolla scholars start in lessons and advance through pipeline.
Yes — college and pro-surfing pathway counseling covers NCAA surf scholarships, alternative pathways, and honest industry navigation. La Jolla teens get support beyond contest heats.
