La Jolla Shores has the gentlest beginner waves in San Diego County — a gradual sandbar bottom, 500 yards of lifeguarded beach, and consistent waist-high surf. Our cohorts come from San Diego Unified's Muirlands Middle, Kate Sessions Elementary, and Mission Bay High, with curriculum support from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Windansea serves only our advanced Surf Athletic Scholarship athletes.
With 22% Spanish-speaking households in La Jolla, bilingual parent communications during contest season keep families informed — registration deadlines, travel logistics, and scholarship coverage explained in English and Spanish.

Windansea is one of California's most historic surf spots, famously chronicled in Tom Wolfe's 'The Pump House Gang.' The iconic palm-frond shack dates to the 1940s.

The Surf Athletic Scholarship program supports BIPOC youth and teens pursuing competitive surfing at the scholarship or professional level. The program provides high-performance wetsuits and boards, pays all competition entry fees, covers contest travel costs across the California circuit, and provides one-on-one coaching from certified trainers. Scholarship recipients are mentored by alumni and partner professional BIPOC surfers, and the program specifically addresses the financial barriers that have historically excluded Latino, Indigenous, and Black youth from the competitive surf pipeline.
We do not charge families. Ever. That policy is structural — grants, donors, and shop revenue fund access so La Jolla youth are never waitlisted for inability to pay.

Professional BIPOC surfers and Un Mar alumni who navigated contest barriers — representation matters for La Jolla athletes who rarely see mentors who share their background in competitive lineups.
Yes — physical therapy and injury prevention are included. La Jolla athletes aren't told to compete through pain because rehab wasn't budgeted at home.
Yes — travel costs for contest weekends are covered including transport, lodging, and meals. Inland La Jolla families (on the coast from many events) aren't fundraising every competition weekend.
