Quizás sientes esto
- —Your teen tried a generic youth program and left bored — they need mentorship, not another room full of strangers.
- —Scholarship and contest pathways feel reserved for kids whose parents already know the surf circuit. After-school should bridge that gap.
- —Your student is bright but falling behind in math — and nobody connects academic help to something they actually care about.
Lo que cambia cuando los jóvenes entran al agua
- Round-trip transportation from partner Title I schools — inland teens aren't left behind (on the coast solved).
- Mentorship pairings with Un Mar staff and alumni provide consistent adults who reflect Point Loma communities.
- Three afternoons weekly (3pm–6pm) provide structure, tutoring, and enrichment — free for the full school year.
Por qué operamos este programa en Point Loma
Point Loma's Sunset Cliffs coastline is too advanced for beginner instruction, but our Point Loma youth cohorts travel to OB Pier and Dog Beach for water sessions, with dryland instruction at Cabrillo National Monument and Point Loma Nazarene University (our educational partner). The Kumeyaay coastal history of the peninsula is woven into every Point Loma cohort curriculum.

After-School Program en Point Loma — Lo que debes saber
Looking for free after-school for teens in Point Loma? Every Ocean Stewards week includes certified tutoring, environmental literacy, healthy snacks, transportation, and Thursday surf sessions at breaks like Sunset Cliffs and Garbage Beach — reinforcing science with ocean experience.
Parents ask if Thursday beach days require swimming ability. We build water comfort progressively in supervised zones — many Ocean Stewards teens start with limited ocean experience and gain confidence within weeks.
Por qué Point Loma importa para nuestra misión
Point Loma sits inside San Diego County's coastal equity gap — 34% of residents identify as BIPOC, yet beach access has historically been gated by cost, transportation, and culture. Un Mar de Colores closes that gap with free programming and school-based recruitment.
With 32,000 residents, Point Loma is one of the communities where a single free surf cohort can change dozens of lives per season. Our shuttles and school partnerships make distance (on the coast) a logistics problem we solve, not a barrier families carry alone.
